Individual brilliance can never surpass a good team dynamic. This is a fact that cuts across all team sports, including esports. A team full of the best players in the world with bad chemistry will lose to a team of average players with amazing chemistry nine times out of ten. The key to building a good team dynamic is to first understand each of your roles and responsibilities, something we will help you do in this article.
As much as it’s infinitely more fun to go all Rambo with no rhyme or reason for your actions just pure bloodlust, the odds of you succeeding are significantly less in competitive matchups. For this reason, it’s far more beneficial to have a good sense of teamwork in order to get desired results and improve overall rankings.
The core team roles in CS2 are: Entry Fragger (Rifler), Support, IGL, Lurker, and AWPer. Having proficient players in each of these roles who understand their responsibilities is vital for building a solid team and can yield incredible results. But what exactly are the specific responsibilities for each of these roles? You may ask.
Core roles in every CS2 team
In-Game Leader (IGL)
The first type of role we will be looking at is unsurprisingly the most integral one, and that is the in-game leader role. This role is very easy to understand but is also super hard to master as it essentially gives you the final say in any of the team’s actions, a huge responsibility to bear.
As a team leader, you will be responsible for having extensive knowledge on the map so as to coordinate team members and steer their efforts in the right direction. You are also responsible for coming up with strategies for your team as well as implementing them on the field.
Entry Fragger (Rifler)
Also known as the rifler, the entry fragger is the target man in a team and is responsible for drawing enemy fire to create space. To be able to succeed in this role, players must be very aggressive as well as have incredible awareness of their surroundings.
Entry Fraggers are understandably the most prone to dying in a team due to the nature of their role, so they also need to relay as much information about the enemy back to their team as quickly as possible.
AWPer
The AWPer is the long-range asset in the team and is very crucial as they wield the most powerful weapon in the game. The position is high risk, high reward, as you can pick apart enemies with ease, but you’re also prone to ambushes as your weapon is slow to reload.
Support
The support role is the most versatile, as you are essentially a backup that should be able to fit any role when needed. You are also responsible for providing utility such as flashbangs, smoke grenades, and molotovs when initiating plays, making the role quite integral.
Lurker
This is the lone ranger in the team whose responsibility involves ambushing and catching enemies off-guard with sneak attacks. You operate independently from the rest of the team and should have impeccable knowledge of the map and enemy tendencies.
Understanding one’s role in the squad is the first step to building a healthy team dynamic. When each member plays their role effectively and builds upon each other’s skills, success becomes nearly inevitable, making it difficult not to succeed as a team.
