CS2: How to be a pro AWPer in Counter-Strike

Share

The AWP is undoubtedly the most powerful weapon in CS2, so naturally the AWPer is the player expected to be the most proficient with it. The AWPer role, although granting a player much power, also demands responsibility, so AWP players should be able to step up for their teams when the need arises.

With the AWP being the hardest weapon to master, players who take up this role must show exceptional skill with the weapon, which is easier said than done. Popular AWPers like S1mple have time and time again made the position look like light work, but the reality is that it takes a lot more than luck to succeed in the role. If you’re interested in improving your performance as an AWPer and truly shining in this role, take a look at some of the tips we’ve laid out to help up your game immensely.

Getting your settings right

There’s no one size fits all for any position in CS2, and the AWP role isn’t any different. Sensitivity settings for rifles don’t translate well to the AWP, so you may need to make some adjustments before going forward. Tip: You can lookup popular pro players’ settings and copy them to see if they match your playstyle.

Learn how to manage close quarter encounters

Skills such as Quick Scoping are highly essential when taking on the AWPer role, as they allow you to handle yourself when confronted by enemies up close. The ability to aim down the scope and fire a shot immediately will help get you out of sticky situations and is a versatile skill to possess.

Master communication

When taking on the AWPer role, you are easily the most dangerous and vulnerable player at the same time, so communication with your team is key. Letting your teammates know your hold locations and movements will help them watch you back and prevent you from being flanked by enemies who are on to you.

Improve your positioning

The AWPer in a team is one of the least mobile players and is most often expected to hold strategic positions to catch enemies off guard. Identifying strategic positions coupled with making your movements unpredictable can essentially turn you into a ghost and a massive problem for your enemies.

Practice as much as possible

There’s no better advice when easing into a role than the emphasis on practice. CS2 luckily offers players a number of training maps they can use to improve their desired skill in a position, such as AWP aim training maps. Take some time to practice on these maps until you feel confident enough for the real deal.

To be a great AWPer, you will need to have the above qualities plus tons more, which we can’t go into right now. All these tips mean nothing though if you don’t have the dedication and drive to pursue your goals aggressively and passionately, so if you’re truly looking to improve in the role, you first need to have the right mindset, then the rest will fall into place. Best of luck!
