Trundle is a versatile champion played in both the top lane and the jungle. He is most known for his excellent dueling potential, and sustain. Another core feature of Trundle is his R, which makes him really good at taking down tanky champions. To help you get the most out of playing Trundle, I have scanned more than a dozen high-profile players and their builds, and brought all their techniques to one place!
Best Trundle Items
1. Ravenous Hydra
We start cooking with the most essential Trundle item, the Ravenous Hydra. The item is crucial for helping you push in waves, and enable you to take skirmishes around the map. When playing jungle, it is also great for speeding up jungle clear.
2. Trinity Force
To load up on stats, and enhance our dueling ability, the next item we will build is Trinity Force. It’s quite an expensive buy, but that is not an issue because its components are highly gold-efficient. Trinity is great as it will give us all the early stats we need. Attack damage, attack speed, a good amount of health, and a little bit of ability haste.
3. Hullbreaker
A big part of Trundle’s identity are his split-pushing abilities, and no split-pushing champion should leave the base without a hullbreaker loaded. Hullbreaker works by increasing every 5th attack against towers, and it also amplifies the resistances of ally minions. These two effects make for much stronger split pushing.
4. Spirit Visage
Trundle’s R has immense healing potential, and the best thing that combines with high amounts of healing is Spirit Visage. It increases the effectiveness of healing by a whopping 25%. It’s also a generally good source of magic resistance.
5. Thornmail or Sterak’s Gage
For our final legendary item, we will want to pick either Thornmail or Sterak’s Gage. I generally tend to take Thorn Mail, especially if the enemy is loaded on AD and lifesteal, however, Sterak’s Gage is more appropriate at times.
The Gage is good for buffing up the HP, and it’s also beneficial due to its shielding passive that activates when you drop below 30% health. The best way to know which item to pick is to feel out both in a couple of different games.
Boots
The boot options for Trundle are truly plenty. The ones that work the best are resistance boots, so that would be either Plated Steelcaps or Mercury’s Treads. We would want to take Plated Steelcaps when we are forced to play against champs like Vayne and Yasuo, who are heavy on basic attack damage.
Mercury’s Treads are more for countering CC, however, they do give some small boost of magic resistance too. Going further without our boot picks, we can also take boots of swiftness, these are somewhat of a controversial pick but they can work too, especially in the jungle.
Runes
- Press the Attack
- Triumph
- Legend: Alacrity
- Last Stand
- Demolish
- Bone Plating
To clarify the rune choice, Press the Attack is essential for dueling, and it can be substituted for Conqueror. We take Alacrity to boost our attack speed, and Last Stand to increase the damage output whilst low on HP. Demolish is our key to easier split push, and Bone Plating is taken for lane sustain.
Final Thoughts
Trundle is one of the best duelists in the game, which makes getting the correct build for him really important. In my experience playing all the way from bronze to high master, I found that the items provided in this guide will help you the most. Good luck using them!
